I’m not sure if this is a note or a newsletter? One thing I do know it’s not a thread, or is it? So I thought enough with my faffing around and endless procrastinations… Just get started and it will all fall into place. So I thought I would tell you about my trip to a local art shop in search of the perfect vacation sketchbook. I prefer to buy in store for obvious reasons as nothing beats feeling the paper, testing size and weight, soft or hardback, spiral bound or consertina? They had them all, but none of them ticked my boxes. I did find a cute little hard back only £3.99 I loved the range of cover colours to choose from, but the paper definitely reflected the price, I bought it anyway! I remembered reading that lots of creators have ‘ugly sketchbooks’ for scribbling silly stuff, jotting down inspiration a place to be free and not feel intimidated by wasting nice paper! So once I got it home I felt inspired to sort through a basket of old pens and pencils and just get playing, see what works and what doesn’t. Maybe I will even take it on holiday!
I know I shouldn’t be sharing what I make inside but I quite liked this ‘ugly spread’ and rediscovered the lovely buttery lines these Derwent pencils create.
Do you have an ugly sketchbook or a basket of ugly pens & pencils shoved to the back of a draw? let me know in the comments.
Ps I would love to know if you think my first proper post is Substack worthy 😬
Signing off nervously…

Love everything about this 💕
Love it! ❤️ and well done on pressing post - honestly, that's the hardest bit.
I love a 'ugly' diary post – shows more than a 'final' piece ever does imho.
